The language does sound the same, so basically it's just access to any available ability card.

You don't need to roll a die to explore.

Then why does the rulebook say successful explore action? There are some threads where the people asked if they had to successfully explore if they went to a previous location and the response was: yes. I hope you right, this would make the game far more pleasant.

He is right. The phrase "successful explore" threw me off a bit as well, but no dice are rolled. It's just a poor choice of words.

And I think the other threads may have been about Searching a previously explored tile...but I may be wrong.

Ok,, so I'm waiting for my copy, but a thought has struck me whilst watching Rdney's superb series.

Is it just me or do the majority of enemies you face in M&M not really make sense?

Admittedly I'm not a nature expert, but rats, spiders, centipedes and roaches don't seem like natural enemies of mice.

Mouseguard for instance use weasels, owls, snakes etc as enemies which makes far more sense (to my mind at least).

Having said that as I was typng this, I guess that there could be something in the story to explain this away....

Still getting impatient waiting for it to arrive next week :-)

Well since a magic spell turned the guards into mice and they are just humans polymorphed into rats, the natural enemy idea will not factor in.

As for spiders well they eat mice cant really think of a justification for the centipede though...

All good advice I would only add that Filch with Knife Strike and throwing daggers can be an absolute beast.

A very simple combo to carry over between chapters and very easy to get chapter one simply from the tinkers kit.

If the dice like you and you encounter Rats more often then not, thanks to his high movement he can easily keep the minion cheese wheel empty and slay 2 Rats every turn.

Probably one of the most powerful early game combinations that is guaranteed to obtain from chapter one if you bring along Nez.

EDIT spelling

Good Evening,

My friend and I played through the first four chapters today.

It was a lot of fun, but it reinforced what I suspect in regards to your question.

I don't think it is a good bridge from rpg's to board games. It is too close to the tactical combat featured in many d&d games. It offers little (if anything) from the board gaming side of things to try to get established rpg'ers hooked.

It may cause frustration as the plot and characters choices (outside of combat)are all on rails, and the combat options are not as expansive as found in D&D.

Good luck!

I use the health counters. When a player searches successfully on a tile, I put a counter poison side up next to the initiative card. It had helped immensely and doesn't get confused with minion health counters that may fall off an initiative card when bumped accidentally.

In order to prevent explore/search spamming, we house ruled that we cannot search tiles we've backtracked to.

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: Rules:: Chapter 4 Questions - Splitting up and Initiative Cards

I'm a little confused on the splitting up aspect of Chapter 4.

First, in the Alchemist Chamber, do players not exit by exploring as normal? The way it's worded in the rules, it makes it sound like the groups 'warp' over to the exit spaces. And then it seems players are promptly forced to exit. While this saves on having to take the time to traverse to board to exit, but it also takes away the opportunity (whether smart or not) to possibly let another Cheese be placed on the wheel while players Search, exchange items, heal, and otherwise prepare for the split....

Second, and more importantly, when entering the King's Chamber, are the Intitiative Cards not shuffled (and Collin doesn't get his possible Cheese)? Or are they shuffled, and the Spider is simply added to the end?

Along with that, do the Initiative Cards get shuffled on each explore as normal? If both parties are at a different pace in terms of exploring rooms, then that seems confusing.

The easiest thing to do is keep any equipment or abilities you gained/lost from the failed adventure. If you record your progress, then you could also reset.

When I get a chance to play with my gaming buddies, they will probably want to try "Iron Man" mode, start over if you lose a quest. Of course my daughter and I just try again if we lose a quest.

The thing is to whatever is most fun for your group.

Does this hold even in the case of Tinkerer's Treasure or a special search?

Keeping in mind that you retain items in your pack after being captured, I would assume that you still lose equipped items that were gained from Tinkerer's Treasure or a special search...

I think you're misconstruing the intended order of operations in my question. If a card has gone to the discard pile (via capture or other method), can it be retrieved by special search or Tinker's Treasure?

If there are no minions on the initiative track, then shuffle them in including the mice on the other boards. If the other mice are already fighting minions then just place the new minions at the end of the iniative track.

This can lead to some strange things, but mostly it works fine.

The rules on the first room are there just so the first tile isn't flipped before the party splits. Play it however you like, but make sure that Colin's group explores first.

Personally my daughter and I really enjoyed chapter 4. We thought it was a lot of fun.

Damn you Rob...I was holding back on this one.

"Surely this one can't be that good?" I'd convince myself.

Now you've gone and given it the seal of approval. Dammit!!!!

Now I'll have to buy it!!!

Oh yeah. In my head, I had meshed the Explore, Encounter, and shuffle Initiative Cards into one action...so it seemed confusing. Obviously, up to this point, we'd never had Minions still on the track when Exploring so I forgot about the rule of just adding them to the bottom (even though that happens with Surges all the time).

Thank you. That makes more sense.

Ah. That I don't know.

Large centipedes will most definitely eat mice. I'm not going to link to the YouTube video for it, as I would risk accidentally watching it again. Suffice to say that the spider and centipede are quite valid enemies and quite dangerous.

As for the roaches, you can either assume that they are overwhelmed by the scent of tasty cheese emanating from the mice and accidentally biting them when they don't have any, or pretend that as the rats are actually transformed guards, the roaches are transformed guard dogs (who also find cheese irresistible).

I'm just waiting for an expansion with a couple of weasels, a snake, and a garden pond tile with a hungry koi fish and a giant frog.

Here's what it looks like. Part of the purpose for the smaller plano is that it fits nicely into the box without removing the insert.
