Thread: Mice and Mystics:: Rules:: First game questions. Water and battling, free actions, drifting, and getting cheese off the initiative track.

Started my first game today and had a few quick questions.

1. If on water, can you move(taking up full move for one space) and still attack?

2. I read here that free actions can't be used on water. Just wanted to confirm this.

3. If say, 3 minions, are on the water space with 1 hero, would the hero still drift at the end of its turn?

4. Does the cheese wheel ever reset outside of surges?'

Thanks!

5. If more minions of the same type as what is on the board, enter in a surge in the middle of the minions' turn, do they act immediately or do they wait until the next turn for minions?

1. Yes, moving in water only consumes your full move action.

5. I'd rule the act immediately. Not totally sure, though.

2. Confirmed. Free Actions cannot be used in water.

3. Yes.

4. Cheese can come off the wheel also via Filch's ability and through a handful of cards (Heroic Sacrifice, I think it's called?)

Thanks!

Some more now.

6. Why would Maginos ever use a melee attack with the starting equipment? It always would make sense to do a ranged attack for the +1. Am I missing anything?

7. What happens if you run out of cheese pieces?

8. If the last person in a combat round kills the last minion, doesa cheese get added to the wheel? In other words, does it have to be a full complete round with the heroes or canit happen in the middle of a round when the minions are finished off?

He still rolls the same number of dice, but hits on swords instead of bows, which give a better chance to hit.

7. What happens if you run out of cheese pieces?

Stop hoarding cheese. I think you can use pennies or some other handy item to mark any excess cheese. Or buy the Heart of Glorm expansion (it comes with 6 more cheese wedges).

Yes, since a round ended with no minions on the tile, cheese goes on the wheel.

9. What if on the last player's action in the initiative track, you explore into the next room. Do you still add a cheese or do the monsters from the new encounter cancel this?

It's a new tile and there are minions present so you don't add cheese.

10. Does Lily start off every scenario with 2 cheese since the room is unexplored before she entered?

No, only when she enters an unexplored tile during the game. Initial setup doesn't count.

If we find a special search item with a normal search can we keep it or do we just have to take an alternative search card?

For example on the prison level tile doing a standard search we turned up the fish hook and line.

One followup. Maginos' staff seems to indicate that the +1 to attack only occurs when ranged. If this is the case, attacking in melee would only be with one die.

We lost the first scenario due to an inordinate amount of cheese rolls by defending enemies. Time to bring in Filch to the next game!

You can keep it. But you can't 'research' for it with the special search. Not that you'd need to in this case, since you already have it.

You still roll two dice for Maginos if you used it's ability to roll as a melee attack when you're in the same space. The +1 applies in both cases.

Ah. Good to know. I figured that the bow symbol referred only to the ranged attack. Thanks!

Normally this is the case. Maginos' Staff's ability is an exception to the rule, as it states that it can be used as a melee attack against enemies on his space.

Yes! Filch, and Lily when you have access to her, are invaluable for keeping cheese off of the minion wheel. We made the mistake of playing Chapter 3 with neither of them in the party and lost to time on the last battle.

The kids and I played Chapter 4 for the first time tonight. This is the one where all six mice split into two parties of three and take separate routes to the Forge tile.

Our split was: Collin, Tilda and Lily went to the King's chamber, while Nez, Filch and Maginos went to the crystal tunnels.

Everything went very well until Collin's group hit the underground river tile beneath the King's chamber. This map seems very difficult because the mice basically have two chances to make it across the water before being swept away (against my better judgement, we played with the FAQ'd water current ruling that states that mice cannot move against the direction of the arrow on water spaces).

I think the biggest mistake we made was to try to cross the water before battling the minions. We had 3 rats, and Tilda jumped right into the water, followed by Collin. Tilda crossed successfully on her second turn, but Collin failed and went over the waterfall. We hit a surge and had a Centipede join the fray, and Tilda was captured pretty quickly, leaving Lily alone to fend off 3 rats and the centipede. She held out for several turns but eventually was captured, ending our run.

What's especially heartbreaking is that Nez found the Scroll of Teleport pretty early on, but had no way to easily get it to Collin's party.

Any advice or things that I might have missed that would make that particular river crossing easier?

Well moving into the water with normal move and then using Scurry to try to get out that turn can help. Once you get one mouse out and it's on a space adjacent to the water space the other mice are exiting to, you get to roll an extra die to get out for each mouse that has made it out and is on that space. So greater chance of rolling *'s to get out.

Maybe search before trying to cross the water, maybe you can find the Whip or something else that can help.

Water crossings can be difficult, but making sure you don't move into water unless you can use a Scurry action is the best thing to do for starters. Not sure if you used Scurry to try to climb out right away or not, but just saying that it's giving yourself the best chance when you have no item card to help out.

Yep, Tilda and Collin both used scurry actions to try to make the crossing. Collin in particular just had bad luck, since he failed twice in a row with Tilda on the far side helping him out.

Sometimes letting the minions come to you is the best strategy. Not only can you spend a round searching and/or letting your ranged fighters take shots at the incoming minions, you also won't split the party up and risk one mouse taking attacks from multiple minions in a single round (which can be devastating in this game).
