So true-so true.

I enjoy Talisman, but I play it for completely different reasons than playing M&M, Arkham Horror, or Power Grid. The point is that it's different than the other games I have.

What sleeves do you guys use for the bigger cards? All the ones I've tried seem to be a bit to big, leaving a little at the sides and more at the top.

Also, does anyone sleeve the character mats, and if so, with what?

1) Playtime - BGG says 2 hours. Is there a way to shorten this?

Being really familiar with the nuances of each scenario cuts down a lot of the time as you won't need to check the Storybook for the special rules per tile. If you play through all of the scenarios on your own, you'll have a much faster time getting everyone through.

It also helps if you summarize the story, instead of reading the story moments verbatim. If you're playing with kids, don't summarize though, as the story can really engage them.

ebridge wrote:

2) Variety/Replayability - I was really hoping for more enemy types. Does it get boring fighting the same ones over and over? What about only have 8/16 location tiles?

I agree that the lack of enemy variety does make the battles feel repetitive. But it works in the scope of the main story.

As far as the locations are concerned, you're exploring the same castle but in different ways. I've played through 5 of the chapters and while there were tiles that were re-used, it never felt repetitive in a negative way, rather it felt familiar.

3) Theme - It sounds like this is really immersive for a dungeon crawler, but I figured I should double-check anyway.

This game is oozing with theme. I'm not a fan of the mice theme, but I am a fan of high fantasy and this game captures that very nicely. I keep telling my friends that this game's story could make for an awesome 3D animated movie - its much better than what I've been watching in cinemas recently!

ebridge wrote:

4) Cooperation - Is it going to be too tempting for daddy to boss all the other mice around?

From personal experience, there are times when I'd make suggestions, or point out what the group needs, or say what bad things could possibly happen if one player makes a (in my opinion) bad or incorrect decision. But the game is forgiving enough to allow for mistakes here and there.

ebridge wrote:

5) Complexity - I'll be honest here. All the rules questions here on BGG give me a serious moment of pause.

Admittedly, there are specific situations which the rulebook doesn't clearly address - you have to cross-reference one rule with another and infer which works for a particular situation. While playing, its easy enough to go with what makes sense to you at that time, most of the situations I encountered aren't game breaking.

ebridge wrote:

6) Price - $50 or more is very pricey for our family. Do you folks feel the game is worth this much? I'd rather trade for it if I can, but this one seems too new for that.

It really depends on what you value in your game. A lot of people seem to really focus on the miniatures more over the rest of the components. In terms of miniature quality, Mice and Mystics is excellent. It's the quantity of the figures that people complain about, as well as the variety of the minion figures.

The other components are top notch. There's great art on everything, the backs of the character cards even have a detailed story on each character, all the tiles are very good works of art. I'd say the art and the quality of all the other components make up for the quantity and variety of the minis.

I think a lot of people are taking the other components of Mice and Mystics for granted. Yes, it doesn't have as many figures as other games in it's price range, it doesn't have the same variety, but you're not just buying the figures.

There's 5 custom good quality dice that is pretty tough - I've seen/owned games with 6-sided dice that are pretty average. There are 16 individual tiles that are beautifully painted - these are works of art, these aren't merely illustrations. All of the chits and tokens are of excellent quality. The box is made of tough, durable cardboard. The rulebook and storybook are printed on high quality paper.

I was very happy with what I got in the box :)

Mostly oxygen?

aheh...

Well duh they are totally different. The point was the Talisman 3rd ed box was appallingly not worth the price. Moreso as you had to fork out hugely for the extensions. (which might fit on the 75% empty box they sold you.) And we are talking 90s prices here. Talisman was insanely overpriced for what you got. Warhammer Quest for the same price was packed to the gills.

Baggies are your best friend when playing with kids. Every time you hit a new tile you have an chance to quit since each tile resets. Bag up each character seperately with their abilities, cheese and equipment. Make a note of where you are in the chapter. Then when you are ready to play again at a later date you just hand out the baggies to the players and you start right where you left off.

Finish the tile, bag it up put it away and you're set. I have mine up on the table right now. It does take FOREVER to get a full chapter in, with all the rest of the family's business.

As for the difficulty level: We're playing it with and, more importantly, for our boys. Sometimes die rolls go mysteriously well. Sometimes the cheese wheel or the chapter marker is futzed with when the boys aren't looking.

I'm playing it to created memories for my children of a great story and a fun game, not beat them to death with rules lawyering.

There is no "should" about it. The game is designed for you to know every detail about the quests, including special searches.

First, it is a co-op game designed for one to four players. Since there is no GM, co-op games are designed to be puzzles where all the rules are known unless they have a "When X happens, then do this" section.

Second:

Rulebook, Page 1 wrote:

Each chapter has its own special rules to give it unique storytelling opportunities. If you read through these special rules as you play, it can slow the game down. Therefore, we suggest that if you are playing this game with other players, you take some time to review the rules for the chapter prior to your game session, and help lead the other players through the chapter by pointing out special rules as the need arises.

Third:

Rulebook Page 5 wrote:

7. Room tile rules: some room tiles that are being
used in a chapter will have specific rules that
apply to that room. Each room tile that has
special instructions will have its own section in
a chapter along with a picture of that room tile.
Those sections can be referred to when the mice
first venture onto that room tile.
Often these
instructions include things like special searches
that let mice find specific search cards by searching
an area of that room tile, or special surges that
instruct players on what minion(s) to place when
a surge happens in that room (special surges take
place instead of a surge listed on an encounter
card). Room tile rules sections can also include
special rules on how to set up that room tile when it
is first explored, bits of story to read through while
on that room, and special rules that apply while the
mice are on that room.

I don't see this in the rules or FAQ or Unofficial FAQ.

Can you confirm source? Thanks!

Haven't needed to protect the mats...YET... but its only been a handful of games. Given that they're thin stock and are the focal piece of each player's "personal space", I decided to get them laminated.

For only 5 or so dollars, Office Depot laminated mine using the thick lamination sheets (10 mil ???- don't remember). You'll only need to buy two sheets - 3 cards per - and have Office Depot do the trimming. I'm really pleased with how they turned out.

Best of all, they now stay in place 'cause they're heavy, and the edges and printing will remain intact for the life of the game (and your kids)!

treachery is making us put all non ranged minions on spaces adjacent to the mice for our encounter. Basically every minion in the box will be surrounding us, pretty sure it means game over... But...

The card has both roaches and greedy roaches on it, but I do not see any reference so far in the rules or an initiative card for greedy roaches, I will have 5 greedy and 3 regular, how do you tell them apart, memory? And I saw a place here that says greedy roaches put the cheese on the wheel, but do not see it the rules or FAQ.

How have you handled this?

Rules say that if you have any greedy roaches, then all roaches become greedy.

Thanks, I was just reading the rules again and saw that, so thought I would come post a picture of what I think the treachery card means to us.

I think the card is badly written. You are playing it as it is literally written, but in this thread, we think it means only the non-range minions on the page that you are currently on.

How do you have so many minions around you? I don't remember a encounter that has both centipede and spider. Are you sure you aren't playing surges incorrectly?

Maybe they had a surge, new chapter included different minions, then surge again? Possible with bad rolls and greedy roaches.

The treachery card that started it says, "The next time you reveal an encounter card, place all non-ranged figures on that card in spaces adjacent to the mice."

I may be reading it too literal, it may mean to place minions normally, but place melee minions next to the mice. So if the pages on the encounter card is 2 elite rats (ranged) and 4 roaches, place the rats on the normal space furthest from the mice and the roaches next to the mice.

I'd also add in that laminating makes the mats look great. I found the gloss and depth added to the artwork by the laminating really helped the colours pop and added to their appearance considerably.

Thread: Mice and Mystics:: General:: A very weird trade proposal

Hi guys,

I've decided that I really want this game (watched ALL the "Watch it Played" videos), but money is tight for my family right now. I was hoping that Barnes and Noble had it, because we have a $50 gift card there. They don't sell M and M

So now I'm wondering if Barnes and Noble DOES have something that some one might want me to purchase, and then trade me their new/like new copy of Mice and Mystics for the game that they want instead. This way I only need to pay for shipping on the new game.

Anyway, I just throw this out there like this because I didn't know how to do this via trade proposals. Thanks for any help/advice you can offer.

More playing than painting this week and my minis are featured!

So I will start with what I think is really cool this week. Some mice I painted are featured on the Panda Manufacturing Web site.
http://pandagm.com/featured-projects

This week I didn't get a lot of painting in but I did get a decent amount of playing in.

I did put some weathering on my Dust SSU Striker.

Jordan and I got a 300 pt game of Dust Warfare in (SSU vs Axis)

He trounced me pretty solidly with symbolic victory being the scenario.

I went to Summer Siege yesterday at Tower games in Minneapolis MN.

Overall I went 1-2.

First game was Alex Davy with his Empire that was a really good game that went back and forth. His first turn was sick with the hellblaster rolling 28 hits and he got a final trans off irresistibly. I took out his steam tank with a wyssaned Ancient Steg and 4 scarvets with savage beasts off. He ended up winning the game by taking out my slann with his demigryphs. He got off enchanted blades on them and I couldn't roll high enough to stop it because he rolled 3 and 3 for the magic dice:(

Second game was against a WoC player named Luke. He had a relatively friendly list and I was able to table it while losing both of my salamanders and like one scar vet. I got my scar vet unit into his big trolls early and Burning Blade helped chew through them, although it was ruled my other scar vets didn't get to take advantage of the flame, but my spears did. I ran them down and that panicked off the chimera. He ended up getting his big warrior block into my other saurus unit but wasn't able to break them so my steg flanked him and was able to break them. Then it was just chaff and hell cannon clean up.

Last game was vs John Stentz nasty Khalida list. He rolled a ton of shot every turn and his constructs really ground me down. The Screaming Skull catapult took out my slann. I think I will put the dragonbane gem back on him:)

I hope to get more painting in this week, but with Jordal Con this weekend I may not get a lot done and I may also be late with next week's update.

Also, no 360 video this week, but hopefully next week.
