I think the game was designed with the intention that all players would know all the details about a room when entered, including the special searches. In some cases (like the very first room of chapter 1) there's one specific spot to search to get the special search. I think if players were not made aware of what that was, it wouldn't be worth their effort to try and find it, especially with the time pressure of the minion cheese wheel.

I can definitely see the appeal from a role-playing point of view. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes.

I don't think it would be realistic to expect players to find some of the stuff without giving them hints at least. You would not only have to search on the right space, but roll a successful search, and, like in the case of the Tinker search, perhaps be a specific player. There aren't a ton of special searches, so I feel like most of them would just get skipped over completely.

I think though it would work and be fun if just said "Search here for something cool"/"Something shiny catches your eye here" without actually telling them what it was.

So only last bit i wanted to add, i noticed that there are always graphics on the areas where there is a special search. Maybe like a ringtone or soemthign ie that legend of zelda noise to "hint" to look around before you leave kind of thing that someone mentioned before

This is not a competition and there is no GM or reason to hide anything. Everyone should know the conditions of a room.

What if you're in Chapter 1, leaving the kitchen and returning to the tunnels. The tunnels are empty, turn order wouldn't be reset, and you wouldn't draw an encounter card. But what if the turn ends without exploring the next tile, and the cheese wheel is all but full. You'd add a cheese, trigger a surge...of what?

I posted this over at plaidhat....

The next time a Mice & Mystics game is released that contains a set of dice (I'm assuming the upcoming small expansion doesn't), would it be possible to get a set of different-colored dice? Like have them look the same, but be Black, Green, or Dark Grey in color? They would work fine with the game (for example, if it is a big, stand-alone expansion), but when you put the dice from both sets together you could have Hero dice *and* Minion dice!

I personally prefer to have the possible attacks match up with the blocking shields, which you can only do if you are rolling just a couple of dice on each side.

You don't have to wait that long. I'm playing it now with 3 five-year-olds.

I think that it's no surge, just move the hourglass forward 1 space.

I'm not a fanatic enough to sleeve the first thing I get a game but I find that shuffling the initiative cards was easier with the sleeves (especially if I do the gentleman's shuffle). I only sleeve the initiative cards and the items cards since they are the ones that are shuffled.

I finally played the game today. If I hadn't already sleeved the cards, I wouldn't bother. Even if the cards were various neon colours, you could still shuffle and deal these out with each being a surprise.

What about getting an extra set and trying staining the dice? There are various plastic and glass stains that might work.

If there is a face up encounter card, you apply the surge listed, if there is no encounter card face up, then you move the hourglass, remove all cheese from the wheel and continue.

Well over in the plastic figure customization realm there are various techniques for staining plastics. The one I remember in particular was one member used a glass staining solution to turn a transparent figure into a really interesting olive oil sort of effect.

Main problem I see is that the tinting coat light chip or flake off if it is an actual coating over the plastic.

Though here is one suggestion...

Plasti-dip. Comes in a spray-paint version. Its basically a rubberized spray, is flexible when dried, so it will NEVER crack.

Don’t ever try to spray it on stainless steel, though. It’ll peel.

Though now Im curious to try some glass staining formulas on some dice to see how they wear.

Just ordered this and can't wait to play through the storybook--one of the main draws for me was the combination of narrative and gameplay. For those who have played through the story, do you think there is room for people to write their own scenarios and create custom narratives with the game? It seems like the game might be amenable to that (and if so, I might try my hand at it), so I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts on that possibility.
