Only during combat and defense. And to further clarify, you do not roll defense if there is no hit.

Also, if there are no minions, you add a cheese to the wheel at the end of each round.

Page 7 under Time is Short:

If there are no minions on the board after the last mouse on the initiative track has taken a turn, place 1 cheese token on the minion cheese wheel.

Page 11 under Melee attack for Battle, to the right of the cheese die and in italics:

Whenever a player is attacking or defending for a minion, if 1 or more cheese symbols are rolled, add one cheese token to the minion wheel on the story control board for each cheese rolled.

No cheese is put on the wheel when rolling for movement.

To add to this rule, I also read a clarification for the range attacking minions. Minions are also limited to attacking Mice who are in the same square or adjacent to them, however once the mouse in their square/adjacent square has been hit, they would attack the NEXT closest, even if they are not in their square or adjacent.

Not so - they attack ONLY if there's a mouse adjacent or in the same space. Look at the rules - they attack more than one only if they CAN attack more than one; and they can't, if the others are not adjacent or in the same space.

I agree this part is not well written - there's a whole related debate I've read re: do you only attack the top initiative slot once you've attacked all else, and I don't like that, but I understand how you can get there.

Also to clarify, you only add cheese when a minion rolls it on a combat roll. When a mouse rolls cheese in combat, they gain cheese to their personal stash instead.

Thematically, I'd tend to agree that it's not unreasonable for Meeps to follow his target. I just don't see that supported by the text on the card. House rule it however you please. :^)

For reference, here's the Meeps card text:

"You may use this ability any time during Maginos' turn. Place the Meeps marker under a minion figure on the same tile as Maginos. While on the Meeps marker, that minion rolls one less die when defending against an attack from any mouse. At the beginning of Maginos' next turn remove the Meeps marker from the board and place it on Maginos' card."

I think there's a strong thematic basis to have Meeps follow the minion. He is distracting him - why else does the minion lose a die when defending? And there's no reference to putting Meeps on the space where the minion is - it's all about the minion. I agree with Kyle - it's the same as putting a Vurst marker under a rat.

I think there's enough here to steer you to moving; I think there is less to support the "stay in the space" approach.

Brodie certainly may not, but all the cats I've ever had as pets have loved cheese! ;)

I don't think it's the same as the Vurst/Elite Rat markers. Those are descriptors as to what the minion is. The Meeps token doesn't describe the minion. The part that leans me towards Meeps not moving is "While Meeps is under the minion". It seems superfluous unless the minion can get away from Meeps.

Maybe Jerry will pop in for an official ruling.

Not being dogmatic here. I understand your point Ray. I just read the part you quote to mean that once Meeps goes back to Maginos, on his next turn, the effect stops.

Seriously, I don't even know where to begin.

1) Greedy Roaches - in the second mission where Lily is on a separate tile then her Roaches begin non-greedy. We met an encounter card that added greedy Roaches, thus Lily's became greedy. All good so far. When we defeated the Roaches from the encounter card, do the ones in Lily's room become non-greedy again? I assumed no. Furthermore when we later placed more non-greedy Roaches on another tile from an encounter card then if the ones in Lily's tile WERE still greedy then the new ones should also be greedy, correct?

2) Dining Room Tunnels Tile & Mousetraps - We enter the dining room tunnels tile and find mousetraps are placed. All good. We go upstairs to the dining room and then later return to the tunnels, no new encounter card is drawn for returning to the tunnels but are the mousetraps still there? I assumed yes.

3) A character is knocked down and we change tile - is the knocked down character still knocked down? I assumed yes.

4) In the Dice Game (Quest 3) can you use a share action to give cheese to a mouse that is about to have to roll (to avoid losing and then fighting the rats straight away)? I assumed no.

5) Can I use the 'Give Order' leader ability to give an order to myself? Allowing myself to take 2 actions instead of moving.

6) Melee minions must hit the closest thing to them. Scenario: a melee minion is standing on a space with 2 mice and another mice is standing on an adjacent space. The mouse on the adjacent space is higher on the initiative track - because the minion can hit anything on it's space or on an adjacent space, does it choose to hit the one on the adjacent because it is higher on the initiative track? Or does it choose to hit a mouse on it's own space (because those mice are technically closest even though the minion has the capacity to hit a mouse on an adjacent space)?

7) What is the targetting priority for ranged monsters? Assuming they can see all the mice then technically all the mice are considered "closest". If this is the case then do they always just move down the initiative track attacking characters (taking into account characters that may have already been attacked that round).

7.5) If ranged monsters are standing on a red bordered space (like a table), do they target other mice on the table with them before mice not on the table (because those are technically closest)?

8) Captain Vurst - When he rolls a cheese in an attack then he gets to make an additional attack. Do you resolve the current attack then roll a new attack or do you continue rolling dice and tally up the hits then roll a single defence roll. It would seem ridiculous that Vurst could tally up 7 hits in a single attack and then a mouse receive only one defence roll. I assumed that he would resolve any hits then make an additional separate attack that you could roll a separate defence roll for.

8.5) When making additional attacks, does Vurst change target for each additional attack (moving down the initiative order depending on the targetting rules as asked above) or does he continue to make attacks against the same mouse?

9) Surges and Special Surges - when a surge happens normally, if there is an active encounter card you must discard it after placing the surge minion, thus while you CAN surge twice, you will only ever add one minions. When in a room with a special surge, does the special surge trigger to add additional everytime or does it behave like an encounter card where you can only add one minion? (Though obviously the hourglass marker will always advance regardless of whether a minion should be placed or not)

Thanks! I'm wondering too, since a clearer wording if meant to be stationary could have been: "Place Meeps in a space containing an enemy. As long as the enemy does not move out of that space ..."

Or maybe it's to distinguish a meepsed from an unmeepsed minion in case there are several in the same space. Four rats on one space, but only the one with Meeps gets -1.

1) it depends on if the greedy roaches on Lilly's tile have been removed. If not, the yes.

2) no. But you can house rule this if you want.

3) yes

4) no

5) no

6) his own space first.

7) iniative track, unless mice are in the same or adjacent space.

7.5) yes

8) separate attack

9) Behaves like in a normal room, only the first surge gives new minions.

8.5) he follows normal targeting rules.

I.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1, ... If all mice are at range for example.

I did talk about ranged minions, but I believe I'm still wrong. Reading further, I think I misunderstood the discussion in the forums.

But if a enemy, mouse or minion is in the square of the attack or adjacent to it, ranged attacks are null and your attacks become limited to only them unless one party moves away from the other so that no enemies are near the ranged attacker. Sorry for the confusion.

As a side note, if anyone has an official ruling, I would love to have that as a resource.

*** SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED CHAPTER 3 ***

I've been playing this game with my young daughter and we've both had a great time. We just tried chapter 3, The Grapes of Rats. We did very well, getting the disguises and having enough cheese to beat all the rats at the dice game. Lots of thematic fun! We had some nice items too -- shields and extra attack dice, along with nice abilities. Then we got to the final room of the game with 3 of our 4 mice at full life. (The 4th had 2/3.)

What was a merry band of mice clipping through a fun story suddenly turned into the end of a Dirty Dozen movie, with all 4 mice shot to death in slow motion amid pitiful screams for mercy. (OK, I know they're captured, but you get the idea.) Let's just say it was... uh... memorable for my daughter.

Before Prince Collin even took a turn, he was taken out. And though Filth got to the top of the chair on his second turn, and he took out 1 minion, he was eliminated right after. Maginos' Chain Lightning failed miserably, except against 1, and Lily whiffed. We did go for minions rather than Vurst to cut back on the number of enemy rolls (but only killing 2 total) and even if we had gone for Vurst (in the hope of making the others flee) we'd have only gotten 2 wounds on him at best... yet he rolls better defense, so it maybe would have been less.

Their good shots, our inability to block shots, and most of the enemies being at the top of the initiative (along with Vurst rolling cheese after cheese after cheese after cheese) just shredded us, especially, like I said, with full life Collin gone before he could twitch a whisker.

I double checked the rules -- I had rotated targets that minions could shoot at... mice can only get uncaptured if there are no minions ( so that's out)... and mice can't leave the room while minions are present (so that's out)...

Did we just get extremely unlucky with our nicely buffed heroes, or am I missing a key game/strategy element?

The ordering of minion attacks are:

1) mice in space

2) mice adjacent

3) if ranged and no mice meet cases 1 or 2 than any other mice they can see.

If multiple mice are in the same category then attack the highest mouse on the initiative track not yet attacked. If all mice have been attacked this turn. Then attack the mice highest on the initiative track.

Example: 8 roaches attack 4 mice. The mice are all in the same space.

The roaches would attack mice 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1, 1.

If you prefer to house rule you could do 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4 to make things easier or 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 to make things harder. I like the middle road done in the rules. And yes Jerry has confirmed this order. I would try to find it, but I am holding a 2 month old :) .

I've had times like this that come out of no where. I've also single-handedly taken on Brodie while all other mice in the party were captured.

I think it's interesting how M&M has ebb and flow.

Unlucky, but we always go for Vurst first. If he is driven off some of the other rats will flee. Last time we played, Lily and Maginos killed Vurst before he could go and the rest of the rats fled (lucky for sure).

Sorry about the bad luck.

Remind your daughter that you can try again. When I get nervous, my daughter tells me "it's ok if we lose we can try again."

Next time you could always stack the deck and put Vurst at the bottom. Unfortunately for me my daughter puts out the initiative cards, so I can't use that.
