for the small expansion, the encounter cards are themed to match the story. While they could be compatible, they are not intended to be. However, the large expansion I plan to be fully compatible with new encounter cards that include minions from the base set as well as new ones. This will make the encounters more varied and also a tad more challenging because sometimes currently the mice catch a break when new minions can't be placed due to limitations in the figures available.

All new heroes will be backward compatible, and I hope some players use them in older chapters. The new mouse in the small expansion is a pretty versatile character. The small expansion also includes some new abilities for the mice to strive for.
