I would think the special surges can only happen once on that particular tile. To me, it's special because it's naming a specific minion type to appear during that surge as opposed to the enounter card surge minion. But I don't read it to mean that the special surge minion can keep coming over and over again.↧

Still not totally convinced, but yeah, last night we tried Lily and Filch and it does seem to change things.↧

Even with a special surge, no new minions get placed. After the first surge on a tile, any other surges clear cheese wheel and move hourglass.

But there are some special surges that are worded something like:
Special Surge - Brodie (or whoever). If there are any additional surges, then add 3 Rat Warriors.
It's worded better than that in the actual Story Book though. I've only encountered them in one chapter so far (I think we're through the first 5 chapters)....

correct. Unless specifically stated for more minions on future surges, no surges trigger minions twice.↧

For the record, ATTN PHG, id be ecstatic to shell out some cash for minis of venestra, vurst, elite rats, etc as well as grateful if orders of such things also included more cheese tokens. Id definitely agree that the biggest of the very few letdowns with this game was that the biggest baddies are just lame little tokens. I know the kids I play w would get SO much more excited if a big rare unique sculpt suddenly hit the table. Much more exciting than a little piece of cardboard that seems less threatening than the rats and centipede.
While I to would love for Plaid Hat Games to release some miniatures for the villains, in the interim I can tell you that the Games Workshop line of Skaven miniatures and Wizards of the Coast Female Driders make fantastic substitutions.

It is because you get that free action only once a turn so you can't swap back and forth between a more offensive and a more defensive weapon. If you are holding both, then no swapping is necessary and you are covered in both circumstances. In one of my games, Filch has a Dagger and the Slicing Dagger. So I use the Dagger when something is below him on the Initiative Track otherwise I use the Slicing Dagger for extra cheeses. Then if I ever get a bow, I can use the Equip action to switch.

The general rule is that rolled cheese is always gained immediately. Think of it as a part of the rolling step, not the resolution step.

Got mine for $60 and change from Amazon.com and in 2 days.
Though I believe in supporting FLGS & Barnes n Noble stores that carry this sort of game! But a $20 price disparity is hard to justify.

One major caveat to this review is that Mice and Mystics is at its heart a Story Based Game and I do not want to ruin the enjoyment of experiencing this story, so I might occasionally get a tad vague on some aspects. I'll try to specify when I am intentionally being vague but if I do slip up I apologize in advance....
On the trivial end of the spectrum, Vanestra should have been a complete surprise, it is thematic and I think part of the story that you have no idea what Vanestra is. Yet when you open the box and tear the plastic off the cards, the top 4 initiative cards are for Vanestra and show a picture of a
SPOILER
. I admit it is a minor detail but imagine how much better thematically players would have been served if these 4 initiative cards were shipped in a small brown envelope that would have cost a mere penny with the words "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL DIRECTED" written on it....
There should have been more miniatures in this box. Vanestra needs her own sculpt and Vurst deserves the same treatment.
Great review, loved it all. You did a great job not giving up Vanestra's identity, then spoiled it with a miniature picture in a reply!:( (At least you apologized in advance.) Is it possible to reduce this to a spoiler alert as well, maybe as a link? Until I saw the image, I was ready to take your advice and have somebody put the Vanestra initiative cards in an envelope for me. Oh well. I still am mighty happy I read your balanced review.
