In SR, the "Storyteller" can play along side of the other players so his/her role becomes more of a "flavor" adder. Sort of - the GM isn't embodied in the game, as far as I know, unlike Gandalf. To continue the storybook metaphor used by SR, he/she is more like the book, describing what happens to (and around) the players.
...and players decide to how to handle what's happening to them unscripted.
