Isn't that what happens in most RPGs? The GM sets out the back-story, then the players figure out what to do? It's a question of degree, really. That said, it's also true of most RPGs, varying from group to group: a given GMs might totally rail-road the players, allow them total freedom of action, or (usually) somewhere in between.


Yes, I agree. Since SR is a coop game, the "GM out to destroy the players" factor is out. In SR, the "Storyteller" can play along side of the other players so his/her role becomes more of a "flavor" adder. Kind of like Gandalf, he's helpful, he knows where to go and what to do but how they all do it is revealed by him and the other players as it happens. "Run, you fools!" :P
