But hopefully future preorder offers from PHG don't suffer.
well from my perspective, I will no longer pre-order anything from Plaid Hat since there appears to be absolutley no reason to.
Same here.

Trying to parse out the promo thing, I think some people have been upset that not ONLY pre-orderers get the promos. EVERYONE who orders from PHG.com gets the promos, even those who order now (and it was never claimed on PHG.com otherwise).
When people have complained about that (weird thing to complain about in my opinion), others have been confused and thought the promos aren't exclusive at all, IE you can get them from other sources, and that has led to more confusion that the promos aren't happening at all, which would be practically criminal.

I'm not one of those guys that has to finish every quest when playing Final Fantasy so I don't even care about the promos (What am I supposed to be getting again? A couple of cards?). I just want companies to meet me 'part' (doesn't even have to to be HALF) way when it comes to 'I give you additional margin by buying direct so give me some additional value'. And yes even though Plaid Hat offered a discount to pre-orders they still make more money off a direct sale than they do for a copy shipped to a retailer (Unless they are doing something horribly wrong or we're suddenly in a world where math doesn't work anymore).
Value in this case could have been early arrival...But I've given up on companies pulling this off successfully after so many high profile failures. I'll just pay more attention next time. Fool me once etc.
I'm not sure how much more they can meet you halfway then offering a pre-order that is effectively the same price as the OLGS. Everything else (the promos, priority shipping, etc), they're doing as best as they can, but that stuff is all at the margins anyway.
I think that this is an interesting discussion, but at the end of the day big online distributors will always have a price advantage over brick-and-mortar stores (although shipping can change that), and the volume they sell and their distribution network means they may often even beat out the game's manufacturer directly, PARTICULARLY because Colby and other game companies can't afford to piss off their brick-and-mortar distributors by undercutting them.
Anyway, major thanks to Colby for being on top of this and doing everything you do, the number of issues you've had to deal with this is rough and the fact that customers are angry (for certain reasons that I'm still not fully comprehending) is disappointing.
Let me simplify....these numbers are entirely place holders...but they'll work for the sake of our argument.
Game costs $10 to make.
Plaid Hat sells game to Coolstuff for $20...makes $10 profit.
Coolstuff sells it for $30...they make $10 profit. The pass on the normal MSRP margin to make it up in bulk.
Or:
Plaid Hat sells it to you direct for $30 and makes $20 profit.
I'm not asking them to undercut Coolstuff....that would be cutting off their nose to spite their face and would just piss of their business partners. Put providing early delivery and meaningful promos that aren't available elsewhere would be doable.
