My 5-year-old son and I absolutely adore this game, but we're having trouble succeeding at the chapters. He doesn't always make the best strategic choices, and while I will make the occasional suggestion ("Filch, I REALLY think I need some help with these rats..."), I want to give him control of his choices as much as possible.
After our fourth failure in Chapter Three, he asked to start the campaign over, primarily so we could do the Miz Maggie side quest (to make the Kitchen a little easier in Ch 3). At the same time, I've decided to tweak a rule or two, just to increase our chances of success a bit. I still want danger for sure, but a minor change or two might ease the frustration factor.
For now, I'm going to try ruling that captured mice can be rescued on their next turn, regardless of the minion status of the room. Yeah, that reduces some of the need to keep everyone's health up, but having a hero out for a round can still be pretty bad (not to mention advancing the hourglass marker).
I've seen many players (including Mr. Hawthorne himself) discuss house rules that they use for their kids. What changes have worked for you? I'm going to stick with my one change first, to see how it goes, but I'd love some further suggestions.
