These were fun. I need to take photos of the other figs soon. I'll update if I do.

How did you make those bases? Could you provide a brief explanation or links to some products you used?
Sure.
1) Paint the top of the base black and let dry
2) Use PVA (white) glue and brush it on the top of the base covering it.
3) Dip the base in a bucket of sand with different sized pieces of sand. I opened up a sandbag I had in my trunk, but you can use sandbox sand or buy different sands at modeling stores. Shake off and remove any that stuck to the side of the base with your finger. Let dry.
4) Take a black ink or just water down some black paint and flood the top of the base. Let dry.
5) Dry brush the following colors in order, using less and less paint each time, so the coverage is less and less. Brown -> grey -> white.
6) Put some small dabs of PVA glue on open areas, and use tweezers to place some static grass on the glue dabs. You can buy this kind of grass at a hobby store. I don't remember where i got mine, but if you have trouble finding it, let me know. I can send you a link. Anyway, shake off excess, blow on the grass to get it to stand up.
7) Clean any sand or grass from the sides of the base and paint them the color you wish.
I've had the villians done for a while. They weren't as much fun to paint as I thought they'd be. I think the spider and centipede turned out okay. The roaches, not so much. I repainted them 3x. They still aren't great, but whatever. :)
Let me know if you have any questions.

That helps a lot, thank you! I couldn't decide how to paint my bases, and this looks way better than just paint (especially for a beginner facing the task of painting in between those spider legs). I was thinking you had used some special multi-color hobby sand; it's amazing how good the drybrushing looks on just normal sand.
Question: is elmer's glue a sufficient PVA Glue? Or should I seek out a more specific product?
