Washes are simple enough that anyone can handle them.
I'm just getting into painting myself and I've found YouTube to be a very valuable source of information.

One other thing I did myself is buy one of those bags of little plastic models Zombies!! Bag o' Babes.

There are other types like plain zombies and dogs and whatnot. It's around $10 and you get 100 models which you can use to try things out on. They are not the best quality but for trying out new methods or learning they do just fine.
You also don't have to worry about mistakes and it will take some pressure off painting for the first time since they are disposable if you wish.
