Also, no two kids are the same... Around here, my 8- and 9-year-old need the most reigning in when we play, and my 7- and 4-year-olds can stay pretty focused. (My 2-year-old just wants to play with the dice. :) )
We do use the breaks between tiles as stopping points, and gather everyone's cards into envelopes. I take pictures of the story control board and board setup with my phone camera, and it makes it really easy to pause in the middle of a chapter.
