I usually describe M&M as a mash up between Heroquest and Warhammer Quest. The combat is essentially the same as Heroquest, with some variants like that ranged attacks only hit on white shields and monsters defend like heroes. The randomization of encounters and initiative is clearly inspired by WHQ, although it seems even more clever in M&M, increasing the tension as the quest progresses, rather than just being completely random. The big thing and pretty much the only thing that I miss from Heroquest when playing M&M is that wonderful sense of exploring a dangerous unknown environment with hidden traps and secret doors waiting to be found. Obviously, a co-op adventure game does not set out to recreate that feeling, so I would say that M&M is the best thing since Heroquest.
