It is cooperative more in a gears of war way or a dungeons and dragons way.In games like pandemic, forbidden island, or defenders of the realm, each player is running around to put out their own fires. You might meet up infrequently to trade cards, but mostly you are working independently to defeat geographically separated threats.
Mice and Mystics instead generally has your characters facing a mutual threat, like a room full of rats. There is a nice amount of strategic cooperation in terms of positioning... Your mouse's placement can doom a friend to 5 attacks from separate minions, if you aren't paying attention. And several characters have abilities to boost the defense of others, or to heal them.
Games like Pandemic are kind of like cooperating to build a boat... You share the goal of building, but one of you goes off to chop wood, another assembles pieces, a third stockpiles provisions...
Mice and Mystics is the journey in the boat on the river. You are all paddling together, performing similar tasks, with a greater direct sense of cooperation.
